In reality court cases can be long, drawn-out affairs. There’s no reason a courtroom drama like The Judge has to feel that way.

Though the premise is engaging on the surface, this father-son law procedural creeps along in its sprawling 141 minute run time. The Judge is also the first film produced under Team Downey, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan’s new production company. It’s exciting to hear that these two want to shed more light on adult-driven entertainment, but it’s also surprising that their first film out of the gate meandered so much.

For this role Downey Jr. went from defending the universe in The Avengers to defending his father, deftly played by Robert Duvall, from a murder conviction. But before we get too far into this tangled web, we’ll start from the beginning and then dive right in.
